I am a junior at Cornell University studying mechanical engineering. Passionate about leadership and service, I am an active member of Class Councils, serve as the Publicity Chair for the Pan-African Muslim Student Association, and the Conference Planning Chair for Cornell’s chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). Being part of NSBE has meant so much to me. NSBE isn’t just an organization, it’s a community that has provided me with mentorship, career opportunities, leadership experience, and lasting friendships that have made my college experience so much more fulfilling. The mission of NSBE is to “increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.” At Cornell, we are upholding every aspect of this mission through our academic help, professional development opportunities, and community service efforts. Not only does NSBE provide a strong support system for its members, but it also supports the community and those looking to join it.
NSBE is helping students navigate their academics and time at Cornell through study jams, tutoring sessions, and study resources. We are also helping students get involved in project teams and research through information sessions and tours. We are making strides toward professional development through resume reviews, interview prep, and networking opportunities. One of the highlights of being part of NSBE at Cornell is the opportunity to attend the regional conference and the annual convention. These conferences are an opportunity to engage in career fairs, technical competitions, and leadership development sessions. The conferences also provide direct access to recruiters from top companies and graduate programs. Our members are able to secure internships, research opportunities, and full-time positions.
Beyond academics and career growth, NSBE is a community that fosters lasting friendships and connections. We host various social events, mentorship programs, and community service initiatives so that students from all years can foster connections with one another that will go beyond college. I have experienced firsthand the impact of being part of such an uplifting community. NSBE has provided me with not only professional opportunities but also lifelong friendships and a network of support. Through all of our efforts as an organization, NSBE continues to play a crucial role in shaping the futures of Black engineering students at Cornell.
I know that my involvement with NSBE will continue to shape who I am as a student and as a future engineer. The support, guidance, and friendships I’ve gained from this community are irreplaceable. NSBE has not only provided me with the tools to excel academically and professionally, but it has also taught me the importance of service, leadership, and community. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to NSBE and to give back to the next generation of Black engineers while at Cornell and once I graduate.
