Meet Joey
Major: Chemical Engineering
Hometown: Minot, ND
Why did you choose Cornell and/or Cornell Engineering?
I chose Cornell Engineering for two reasons: the first reason is how many opportunities Cornell offers engineering students outside of classes (project teams, research, and on-site recruitment events with wonderful companies). The other reason is how Cornell is located in a smaller-sized town. Coming from a rural area in North Dakota, I felt my transition into a college over 1000 miles away from home would be easier in a smaller town setting like Ithaca.
What is your favorite thing about Cornell and/or Cornell Engineering?
My favorite thing about Cornell Engineering has been the project teams program. It is a unique feature Cornell has to showcase project teams appealing to many different industries (environmental, aerospace, biotech, etc.). I was fortunate to be a part of Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW) and be the President for the year of 2024. Getting to not only work on sustainable projects, but also enhance my leadership and oral communication skills has helped me greatly during my internship experiences.
How did you get involved outside the classroom?
As previously mentioned, I was involved with ESW from my Freshman Fall semester to Senior Spring semester. I am also involved with the City of Ithaca by being an Energy and Water Data Analyst Intern with the Ithaca 2030 District–an organization Ithaca buildings cooperate with to reduce energy and water usage intensity to half of their baseline targets by 2030. Lastly, I am involved with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Cornell chapter as a Co-Treasurer. I help oversee and plan the funding for AIChE professional and social events.
